A work heavily influenced and clearly modelled upon Vaughan Williams Lark Ascending, this Milford piece for solo Violin and small orchestra nevertheless inhabits a unique soundworld. As a depiction of Hardy’s poem the piece treads a darker path than the Vaughan Williams, a foretaste of the style his music would adopt in later years.
