Bernard J. Taylor

Bernard J Taylor has had more than 100 productions of his stage works worldwide His early works were chronicled in the Encyclopedia of Film and Stage Music. In 2013 he was made an Honorary Fellow by the Victoria College of Music and Drama in London for “services to music and the performing arts”. Eight productions of his stage works in San Antonio won fourteen awards at the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 ATAC Awards (San Antonio’s version of New York’s Tony Awards). Taylor’s shows have been performed successfully in the US, England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Holland, Romania, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, Hungary, Japan and Italy.

Now resident in Texas, Bernard is best known for his works for the stage as one of the rare breeds of composer/lyricist/librettist. From the passion and grandeur of his breakthrough Wuthering Heights, classical intimacy of his most popular work Pride and Prejudice to the chamber music intricacy of the more recent award-winning Road to Madness, he has been ever present on the musical theatre stage across the world for over 30 years with more than 100 productions of his work and recordings that feature a host of both established musical theatre legends and upcoming new performers. Influenced by the great Broadway and Hollywood songwriters of yesteryear his lyric writing eschews poetic reflection and deflection in lyric writing and returned to the 19th Century tradition of narrative lyrics, where the words arise directly from the action and situation taking place on stage. As an admirer of classical composers and great literature, he has also produced two major symphonic works, several straight plays and a range of novels. His most recent works are The Love of Becky Sharpe, loosely adapted from Thackerey’s classic Vanity Fair and new adaptation A Christmas Carol.
