Haldane Campbell Stewart (1868-1942)
Born into an illustrious family, the son of a barrister and baronet, HC Stewart was a talented and versatile composer as well as a teacher and professional cricketer.
Although best remembered for his carol On This Day Earth Shall Ring he wrote for solo voice, choir, church and solo instrument. Married to cellist Elinor Hunt and father to viola soloist Jean Stewart his output includes a small but forward looking selection of material for solo strings.
The archive is privileged to hold the remaining unpublished works donated by Simon Lawford, who in turn received them from Jean Stewart. We will be bringing these items into print throughout 2019 and 2020.
